72 Hours Later

72 Hours Later… Has CPW left you with this? :) So I learned two major things about myself this weekend, courtesy of you guys: 1. I apparently do not look like myself *points at the banner* (perhaps bringing a stuffed penguin with me next CPW would help? =p) and apparently I look a lot taller. 10. Wow, you dont sound like a college professor in real life! Im sure now that you guys start to head back to the four corners of America (and the world!), there will be an opportunity to relive CPW through the various guest blogs that would undoubtedly be popping up over the course of the next few days. But I just want to say something. In a word, you guys are awesome. Meeting so many of you over the course of this weekend at random events seeing how you all hail from OH, PA, VA, MD, HI, NY, MA, CA, NJ, MI, SC, GA, TX, MO, WA (just to name a few) and getting to know your passions in high school, from research (I dont know how many ISEF and Siemens people Ive talked to these few days) to violin to scuba diving to volunteering to a passion for languages to butterfly collectingit all had been wow. I am now convinced of the statement by Admissions that they are excited about this class. You guys are truly one group of accomplished people that blows my mind away. As you undoubtedly now begin to ponder your college choices and attend other colleges admit weekends (I know Princeton is next week, and Stanford the week after), I hope you have a good time exploring other college campuses (though, youre not allowed to have a better time than you did at MIT =p) in making an informed decision about where to spend the next four years of your life. But theres something you should know. One of the questions that kept on popping up over the weekend was, How much of MIT Blogs is real? Why does it always look like you guys are having a good time? MIT Blogs are real. We dont try to give you a sugered version of what MIT is like. This is real stuff. Granted, we dont always blog about our stress during the weekdays when were up tooling all night nor do we blog about the anguish of failing an exam, but hey, thats just something that comes with the rigorous, well-renowned scientific training that MIT offers. Yes, we do get stressed out at times, but we also know how to enjoy life when were not doing coursework (and there are too many blogs to that effect, so Im not going to bother linking them all). :) We hate MIT at times for keeping us up at 4 or 5 in the morning, but we love MIT for all the possibilities it offers diversity, excitement, enthusiasm, research, and a healthy dose of quirkiness, to name a few. This is why IHTFP stands for two things. This is why my EC interviewer reflects nostalgically upon her time at MIT. This is why we come together during CPW and Orientation to show you what MIT has to offer. A lot of people are wary of the statement that CPW is fake you guys are just getting this together for us, but its not like this during the school year. True we might not be having like 600 different events every single weekend, but were trying to give you a cross-section of MIT culture, to attempt to show you everything that you can possibly be involved in at MIT. We might not always be having barbecues, roofdeck parties, and pancakes at 2 in the morning, but theyre all there. Were not trying to bribe you. Were welcoming you to MIT. On Saturday, a prefrosh asked me, If you could pick only one thing that you love about MIT, what is it, and why? I said, The people. Definitely the people. What makes MIT so amazing is the excitement and the enthusiasm thats present across all facets of the Institution. Intellectual curiosity in class aside, the flow of energy in student groups, the passion in student-led initiatives are really things that make MIT students so special. MIT admits passionate and driven individuals, provides them with a place to learn, and lets the students bump into each other, do crazy stuff, and accomplish the things theyve been dreaming to do. I hope you got a taste of that during the weekend. And I hope you enjoyed the liquid nitrogen ice cream. :)

Believe it or not, drugs have been around for thousands of years. In the medical field, drugs are any type of medicine (or other substance), which has a physiological effect when it is ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. Drugs can produce both harmful and beneficial effects once it is consumed and, â€Å"decisions about when and how to use them therapeutically always involve balancing the benefits and risks† (Rang 1). Drugs approved for human use are available through prescription and can be bought freely over the counter. Although drugs have been a great addition to the medical world and its advancement, not all drugs are legal and available for use. The government bans certain drugs, and illegal possession and trafficking of these†¦show more content†¦It is an undeniable fact that illegal drugs do more harm than good, which is why Canada should not legalize all drugs. The growing concern in many communities is how easily accessible drugs are to young adu lts. At least 42% of Ontario students surveyed have admitted to consuming an illegal substance in the past year. According to Statistics Canada, 60% of illicit drug users in the country are between 15 and 24 years of age. This is a rising crisis due to the health problems that teens who abuse drugs are likely to develop such as, â€Å"short-term memory loss, anxiety, depression†¦ cardiovascular disease, liver damage and etc.† (Canadian Centre for Addictions). Furthermore, â€Å"Science Daily found that youth in 12th grade who use marijuana, alcohol, and other illegal drugs are likely to drop out of school† (Canadian Centre for Addictions). Supporters of the legalization of drugs â€Å"believe that making drugs legal will take away the temptation to use them† (Novelguide). However, this idea would be far from logical as, if drugs were to be legalized then they will be ultimately available for young adults to consume. This poses a threat to the health of the young drug consumers, as these substances are likely to be mass-produced and mixed with other substances that are not exactly safe for consumption. The Thermidorian Reaction, 27 July 1794, was the response on the violent p olicies of Reign of Terror and actually put an end to it. Being inspired by the ideas of the French Revolution, the people of France continued their struggle for their rights and for effective state system. The power in the country was taken by the Executive Directory (1795-1799). The new body of executive power that consisted of five elected Directors started functioning within the country and at the same time took intense military actions abroad. The inner policies of the Directory were not successful with people and gradually led to the loss of its authority. Particularly, the inability to implement successful taxation and financial policies, â€Å"flourishing† corruption and faction between the directors (ibid.) were step by step undermining the influence of the Directory. The French people expected the opportunity to forget about the events of the last years; however, the governance of the Directory did not meet their expectations, as the country did not approach to the desired stability. On the other hand, the military successes of France did not contribute to the authority of the Directory, but backwards, actually gave birth to Napoleon’s bright political start. In 1799, the Directory finished its existence. Failures in the inner and foreign policies gave a good opportunity for Napoleon who came to France after the military operations to overthrow the Directory and seize power. Napoleon’s success at the first stages of his governance can be explained by the effective balance between â€Å"liberation† and strengthening of his own power. When forming the new political system of France, Napoleon followed his imperial intents: he focused on eliminating both the ascendancy of the old nobility and the influence of the contemporary revolutionary trends of equality and liberation, and the most appropriate decision was to create the new nobility based on the military estate which would support his power. Besides the political field, Napoleon reformed the legislation, having introduced the Civil Code: again, on the one hand, it was aimed to provide equality; on the other hand, this concerned only the adult males, omitting the rights of women and children.
